One of the best parts of my job is that I get to be around a lot of joyful, healthy, creative people. Those are the three qualifications of being a Danceworker. It’s what gets us out of bed in the morning and we take it seriously—enhancing the joy, health and creativity of our community. If we can’t live it ourselves we have no business trying to help someone else do it.
Don’t get me wrong, that doesn’t mean life is always a picnic and that we’re always happy—it’s not and we’re not. But we do what we can to build up reserves so when a situation doesn’t go as we had hoped or we’re fighting off depression, heartbreak or the flu, we push through with more than grumbles and a frown.
Being healthy means a lot of different things. There are probably as many anecdotes as there are individuals. There are three facets to overall health—physical being the most obvious but equally important are mental and spiritual health—each of the three demand our thoughtful attention and discipline.
This is breast cancer awareness month. I don’t think I know anyone today whose life isn’t touched by breast cancer in one way or another. So Danceworks has teamed up with Perfection Salon to raise money for ABCD: After Breast Cancer Diagnosis and support the fight against breast cancer. This coming Saturday, we are hosting a fun and healthy evening of dance, and breast cancer health education.
You can try Zumba with Ellyse, African Dance Workout with Patrice or our newest dance fitness class, Bhangra Workout with Mohammad—come ready to move! There will be stylists from Perfection available to put your hair back in place before you head out and hit the town, chair massages by Elements Massage if you overdo it little, an OB-GYN nurse available for questions, and a speaker from ABCD.
