Upcoming Performances of 2022-23

I Am Because You Are…

November 12-13, 2022
Tickets available soon

Baumgartner Center for Dance
128 N Jackson St. Milwaukee WI

About the Show:
“And you are because I am.” In DPMKE’s 25th anniversary season, the company explores the philosophy known as “Ubuntu” by looking back at the unforgettable work that has shaped Danceworks through the years. This philosophy, a belief in which our common bonds with others shape us deeply, single handedly reflects our community’s investment in helping shape our identity. We are also able to fully become who we are by unapologetically sharing ourselves with others and our history as a company runs through the veins of each new work we present.

Please venture back in time with us to remember through a documentary telling and live embodiment of the company’s touching, comedic, and curious works that have become Danceworks favorites. Los Angeles artist and Milwaukee Native Taryn Vander Hoop will set new repertoire on DPMKE and our own Gina Laurenzi and Christal Wagner will revisit and craft brand new works for the stage respectively.

Rusalka

February 9-12, 2023
Tickets available soon

Danceworks Studio Theatre
1661 N Water St. Milwaukee, WI

About the Show:
Danceworks Performance MKE and Milwaukee Opera Theater take the stage for their 7th collaboration and telling of the tale of Rusalka, a story of a water nymph searching for humanity through love by way of magic, featuring singing sprites, dancing goblins, and Jason Powell as the moon. This musical Fairy Tale, resembling the classic Disney move The Little Mermaid, is rooted in Czech folklore, with compositions by Folk music inspired Antonín Dvořák, libretto by Jaroslav Kvapil. Alongside this tale’s classic arias will be a modern day restructuring of the story by song writer, Jason Powell, who is no stranger to sharing the stage with Danceworks and MOT. He reimagines this story through a modern day lense by crafting playful commentary on the current state of our water climate while comparing our blind fantasies of indulgent living to Rusalka’s fantasies with love.

Small but Mighty

June 2-4, 2023
Tickets available soon

Milwaukee Youth Arts Center
325 W Walnut, Milwaukee, WI

About the Show:
In celebration of live contemporary American music, Danceworks shares space with emerging Milwaukee chamber ensembles and an exciting collaboration between DPMKE member Nekea Leon and the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra’s Steel Band Ensemble. Featured musical guests include the Microcosm Ensemble, the Black Cat Ensemble, and the Cosmo Reed Quintet. A highlight of the concert is composer Jenni Brandons Wildflower Quintet for Reeds. The company dancers will share the concert crafting world premieres and exposing our unique voices. Chamber music known for highlighting a single voice celebrates subtlety and intimacy while creating space for clarity, direction, and powerful ornamentation. This show celebrates the individual and the power of allowing one person to speak at a time.

About the Show:
Artistic Director Christal Wagner and Danceworks Performance MKE collectively took a scientific approach to unearthing what happens when the nervous system goes haywire. This concert offered a meditative exploration of movement and visuals that dive into the stress cycle, the nervous system and its various subdivisions. Influenced by the stressors of the Covid-19 Pandemic, the company aimed to support our community struggling with mental health and general stress through a year-long mission that exposes how we can overcome these deeply wired roadblocks and reveal a path to a healthier future. We offered an educational and microscopic look into the fight, flight or freeze response by exploring ideas anyone can employ to become more deeply self aware. Composer Sam Mullooly premiered an ambitious work of complimentary sentiment titled, A Balance.

About the Show:
Senior company member and Choreographer Gina Laurenzi collaborated with Chicago band Twin Talk to create a contemporary movement experience with a jazz influence. In Sonder, we welcomed live music to the stage as DPMKE dancers and Twin Talk shared space, tuned into one another and playfully delighted in improvisation. Crafting a blend of sound and movement guaranteed to set a mood and satisfy the senses, the artists invited the audience into an intimate world as they flowed into conversation, communicating through their respective art forms.

About the Show:
This DPMKE curated concert featured the ideas of the performers and guest artists of DPMKE as they explored the impacts of labels, their danger to society, and the liberating effects of restructuring the societal labels around us. In a curious investigation of the internal assignment of ideas we apply to ourselves and others on a daily basis, Danceworks aimed to heighten the voices of the BIPOC and LGBTQ+ company and community members. In this concert, we collectively broke down the use of stereotypes, internal bias, fear, stigma, shame and the inability to separate a person from a label dubbed by society and/or self.
