Program A – 5pm
HEART of the Matter (aspects of 20 years of solos)
Choreography and Performance: Catey Ott Thompson
Music: Trioon 1 by alva noto, Ryuichi Sakamoto
Notes: The heart of my work is autobiographical: abstract yet emotional. Looking back, there is joy and gratitude for the many hours of dancing that occurred as I choreographed my life’s journey. As the physical heartbeat changes over time, the movement memory continues to flow deeply. Catey Ott Dance Collective’s 20th Anniversary Event will be on October 4th and 5th at Milwaukee Ballet’s Baumgartner Center for Dance. Save the date! www.cateyott.com
And I, Alone (an ode to Mary MacLane)
Choreography: Calla Beverly
Performance: Calla Beverly, Kaylee Branshaw, Angelina Garcia, Beck Kimbro, Jessie MacDonald, Brooke Allison Parkinson, Lia Smith-Redmann, Katie Speltz
Music/Sound Score: When Will You Come Home? By M83, La complatinte du soleii by Laura Cahen
Notes: “Sometimes I think I am a strange, strange creature—something not of earth, nor yet of heaven, nor of hell. I think at times I am a little thing fallen on the earth by mistake: a thing thrown among foreign, unfitting elements, where there is nothing in touch with it, where life is a continual struggle, where every little door is closed—every why unanswered, and itself knows not where to lay its head. I feel a deadly certainty in some moments that the wild world contains not one moment of rest for me, that there will never be any rest, that my woman’s-soul will go on asking long, long centuries after my woman’s-body is laid in its grave.” – Mary Maclane 1902, age 19
Thank you endlessly to my cast for trusting me and my work. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to work with such talented movers <3
What We Leave Behind
Choreography and Performance: Tracey Gessner
Music/Sound Score: “The Essence” by AURORA, Found voice recording of Diane Johnson and Tracey Gessner, 1980.
Notes: This piece is inspired by an old tape recording of my mother and I reciting nursery rhymes together when I was 2 years old. I wanted to capture the feeling of trying to hold onto something that no longer exists in this world. Thanks for coming along on my existential journey! Love to my family and friends who are here as it’s been a looooong time since I’ve done anything like this. XO
NORMAL
Choreography: Maya Hirsig-Smith
Performance: Maya Hirsig-Smith, Charlotte Reynolds, Madison Lower, Ryon Davis
Music/Sound Score: Thule, PTSD, Interrogation and Moonlight by Travis Lake, Me and You by Disclosure (Flume Remix)
Notes: I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to my family and friends who have been my unwavering support throughout my mental health journey. Your love, patience, and understanding have been my anchor during the toughest times. I can’t begin to explain how much your encouragement, kind words, and presence have meant to me. You’ve listened without judgment, offered comfort when I needed it most, and helped me find the strength to keep going. I’m so lucky to have each of you in my life, and I am forever grateful for the love and support you’ve shown me. Thank you for helping me heal and reminding me that I’m never alone in this journey.
LAUGHING TIGER, BLACK HORSE (in memory of Carol Hoehn)
Choreography and Performance: Lia Smith-Redmann
Music: Baranheer by Nair Band
Notes: What I learned from tai chi defined my way of moving as a dancer: to be grounded, to accept flow, to practice patience, and to soften in order to be strong. The greater lessons I learned came from Carol: to above all be good-humored, kind, generous with your wisdom, and loud in your truths. How lucky I am to bear such gifts. It is an honor to be part of, and extend, Carol’s legacy.
One Last Time
Choreography and Performance: Katie Speltz
Music/Sound Score: “Couldn’t Tell” by Dermot Kennedy

Music/Sound Score: Rufus Wainwright “Poses”, The Tiptons “Sleepytown”
Notes: We created this piece from prompts that asked the performers, “What do you want to dance about?” Much of the conversation and interest was about world topics that reflected on humanity and our duty as humans to be in community, in support, and conscious of the larger picture. Butterfly Effect is the idea that small changes in a system can lead to significant and unpredictable consequences over time. The group has been wondering what unpredictable changes could happen if we take a step in the wrong direction?
Sculpting the Muse
Choreography and Performance: Adelaide Wateski
Music: Sugar Walls by Masego

Music/Sound Score: “The Eye” by ULTRA SUNN, “You” by BICEP and Ejeca, “Young Foxes” by ULTRA SUNN, “Vogue” by Madonna.
Costumes/Styling: Libby Steckmesser and Bandit MKE
Notes: How can we ruffle the feathers of our symmetrical and perfectionistic society? How can we push the boundaries of fashion and shift our perspective on individuality and personal style? Let’s shed some light on the fashion industry, and maybe even dismantle the elitist and sophisticated nature that it so often brings. It’s time we normalize our natural humanistic moments of awkwardness, sass, connection, and make mistakes!

MAYA HIRSIG-SMITH
Maya Hirsig-Smith: I am a passionate dancer and artist whose work is deeply influenced by my personal journey through movement. Dance has been a transformative outlet for self-expression, allowing me to communicate emotions and experiences that words often can’t capture. My practice is rooted in exploring the physicality of movement, rhythm, and connection—both to myself and others. Through dance, I delve into themes of growth, resilience, and the power of vulnerability, using the body as a medium to tell stories of personal transformation. I am constantly inspired by the intersection of technique and raw emotion, and my work seeks to push the boundaries of what dance can convey. Presenting in Get It Out There offers an exciting opportunity to share the depth of my experience with a wider audience, inviting them to witness the raw, emotional power of dance as a form of storytelling. I hope to inspire others to explore their own potential for expression through movement, showing how dance can be both a personal and collective journey.

MEET THE ARTISTS OF DIPC
BOB BALDERSON
Bob Balderson has been taking classes at Danceworks for over 20 years. He has been in four DANCEWORKS ON TAP shows, including two solos and two duets with Lamont Johnson.
TIA BUDYAK
Tia Budyak had grown up surrounded by a household filled with singers, instrumentalists and artists that carried throughout her life in different ways. She has always loved dancing since they were in middle school, but never had an opportunity to pursue dance until her freshman year of high school when she joined her school’s dance club, “F-Steps.” They gained experience in learning, teaching, and performing by being in that club and they loved every second of it. That was when dance had become an even bigger passion in her life.
Danceworks is the first studio they had gone to for further dance experience and she’s enjoyed every second of her time in this community. She has taken hip-hop, ballet, contemporary, K-pop, and a couple musical theater and jazz classes during her time here at Danceworks.
They’ve been at Danceworks since March of 2024 and have performed in “Rhythmworks” with the jazz and K-pop groups. She is grateful for the opportunity to be a part of DIPC as the youngest member and is excited to see what the future entails in her journey with dance!
JULIE BOROUCHOFF

Julie loved to polka, yet she yearned for other dance experiences. She attended Marquette University and graduated with a Theatre/Dance degree. Tap dancing became her favorite dance style. In the 1990’s she discovered DANCEWORKS Milwaukee. So many wonderful teachers and different styles of dance. Julie found a place as an assistant with the MAD HOT RHYTHM program. Her participation with DIPC has been a life changing experience and has helped to ease her back into movement and dance after a spinal cord injury.

“Danceworks is an enchanted place. I’ve learned so much from the incredibly talented, kind, and passionate artists that teach here. I’ve also had the unparalleled pleasure of seeing my wife Janice and our two daughters study and perform here.
Dance is movement. Movement is life. As days pass these moments of momentum become more precious. The opportunity to move with these young dancers, strong and focused and seemingly immortal is a gift. An elixir that imbues us, albeit fleetingly, with that same sense of abandon. Of freedom. Of flight.” – Tom C. Hjelmgren

MARY ANN MITCHELL
For five decades, Mary Ann Mitchell lived her passion as a psychotherapist using words in the art of therapy. Her only dance experience had been in the Latin dance world with her husband.
Now a community of dancers has carried her into her seventh decade. Instead of words, Mary Ann is living in an exciting community where expression and communication is through movement. Being a member of DIPC since it’s inception with Dani Kuepper has even given her the opportunity to perform.
Mary Ann would like to thank her dear dancing comrades and Dani, Kim, Christal, and Gina for leading the group on.
TAKARAH MEYER
