ADULT CLASS STYLES

Hip Hop (all levels) is a high-energy dance form using the latest music mixed with movements that are influenced by some of today’s top video choreographers. Hip Hop is a broad collection of urban street dance styles including breaking, popping, locking, turfing, jerkin and krumping and often incorporates elements of freestlying. Classes will provide a structured method of learning various styles of movement in a fun and vibrant environment. Each class will incorporate dance combinations and routines and will encourage individual expression and personal style.

K-POP music, originating in South Korea, has taken the world by storm and has gained popularity on various music charts. K-Pop Dance Covers emerged around 2011 as part of the cultural storm of Korean pop culture. K-Pop cover videos have become one of the highest forms of tribute that fans use to honor and support their favorite artists. In this workshop series, you will learn choreography from popular Korean artists, BTS and others.

Danceworks’ 50+ classes are designed for adults who are just starting out or are returning to dance after a hiatus. Students choose from a variety of movement styles that help gain mobility, strength and balance in a motivating and exhilarating environment.

African Dance Workout blends African dance, aerobic movement and live drumming into a cardiovascular workout like no other.  

Barre Workout fuses Pilates, yoga and resistance training with ballet barre work and dance; appropriate for all ability levels. Uses inspiring music and various props, keeping the workout fun, motivating, and continuously moving.  (mats and props provided)

At home barre workout props:
A set of light hand weights – 2-4lbs, Small Pilates/Fit Ball measuring 7-9″ diameter, Yoga Mat, Chair or Counter Top to Substitute for Ballet Barre, Pillow/Rolled towel for under the knees

Pilates utilizes breath, alignment, mobility and strength to bring your entire body back into balance, enhance your posture and teach you functional healthy movement. Build awareness between your mind, body and breath to leave feeling connected and centered. Pilates is a great way to cross train and complement dancing or other athletic pursuits! (Mats and props provided).  

Vinyasa Flow Yoga connects movement with synchronized breath, creating a smooth and continuous flow from one pose to the next. The transitions between poses are often as important as the poses themselves. This continuous movement helps to build strength, flexibility, balance, and mindfulness.

Ballet (all levels) focuses on exercises, techniques and steps of classical ballet with an emphasis on terminology and correct body alignment. Develops an aesthetic awareness of the art of classical ballet. Includes a warm-up at the barre with center floor work and combinations.

Intro to Ballet is taught in a follow-along style, ideal for those with some experience who wish to refine their skills and deepen their knowledge of ballet terminology, emphasizing the fundamentals of classical ballet, along with the development of musicality and strength. Participants should have a basic grasp of ballet basics and be eager to advance to the next level as they are introduced to more challenging elements. 

Beginning Ballet is ideal for dancers seeking to expand their ballet terminology and take on more technical challenges. It is recommended that participants be well-versed in ballet terms or for those with some previous ballet training who are ready to progress beyond the beginner level, as the class moves at a faster pace. Longer exercises with more complex steps are introduced at the barre and center.

Continuing Ballet is designed for those who have already completed the introductory and beginning ballet classes. The continuing ballet class will move at a slightly quicker pace and will focus on proper technique and alignment. Dancers will strive to develop a strong foundation while exploring their own unique style and expression.

Classical Ballet Barre (Virtual)Enjoy Danceworks’ Classical Ballet Barre from the comforts of your home.  Classical ballet barre is a perfect class for those who want to get their ballet class in, but only have 60-minutes. Although the entire class will occur at the barre and follow the traditional progression of exercises, some center exercises, such as pirouettes and petite allegro will be included. The focus of class will be on proper technique and postural alignment, while inherently strengthening the body and increasing flexibility. It is recommended for those who have at least one year of ballet technique experience.

Afro – Caribbean Dance – Immerse yourself in the vibrant beats and rich cultural tapestry of Afro-Caribbean dance! This dynamic dance class will take you on a rhythmic journey that celebrates the diverse traditions and rhythms of the African diaspora, fused with the infectious energy of the Caribbean.

Contemporary Dance (All Levels) – Characterized by its versatility, Contemporary dance can be danced to any style of music and united with other dance forms to create a new style of movement. Students learn to use their bodies in a variety of ways. Technique, body alignment, and emotion are essential to establishing a mind-body connection. Contemporary dance features a wide variety of dance techniques, reflecting its melting pot nature.

Calming Contemporary is a candle-lit class that explores movement, breath work, and mindfulness meditation techniques geared toward calming the nervous system’s fight or flight response. This class consists of floor work based in somatic practices, contemporary modern movement techniques (low impact) and guided by breath, body weight exercises based in internalization and mindfulness, and guided self massage techniques aimed at muscle release and deepening stretch.

Beginning Tap is designed for students who have never had any previous experience in tap dance. The class will cover basic steps and terminology that will prepare students to move into the Beg/Int class. Tap dancing is a great way to develop musicality, timing and balance.

Intermediate Tap – Sharpens reflexes, improves memory skills and coordination. Students will establish fundamental tap movements and vocabulary and will works on basic rhythms and steps that will progress into fun and lively dance combinations. Students will also work to develop musicality, timing, balance and quick weight shift, all important elements of tap dance.

The Tap Performance Workshop will explore the many layers that go into tap dance choreography including musicality, articulation, and rhythm. Participants will learn an exhilarating piece of choreography to be performed in Danceworks annual summer concert, Rhythmworks. This workshop is appropriate for intermediate/advanced dancers teen through adult.

Jazz Dance (all levels) – Rooted in the rhythm of jazz music, jazz dance is a true American art form. Classes will include a warm-up that will develop strength, flexibility and coordination and dance technique that is specific to jazz dance. Each class will also include dynamic choreography set to popular music and will encourage individual expression and the development of personal style.

Musical Theater Dance refers to the style of dance commonly found in stage productions such as musicals. It is a highly energetic and expressive form of dance that often combines elements of various dance styles, including jazz, ballet, tap, and modern dance, to tell a story or convey emotions within the context of a musical performance.

The Jazz Performance Workshop is an opportunity for dancers to enhance their knowledge of jazz dance. This workshop will emphasis authentic qualities that jazz dance is known for such as syncopated rhythms, dynamic movements, and expressive storytelling. Participants will learn an exhilarating piece of choreography to be performed in Danceworks annual summer concert, Rhythmworks on August 17 & 18. This workshop is appropriate for intermediate/advanced dancers teen through adult.
