DPMKE welcomes Peter Stathas Dance to the spotlight

2025.04.03 – Author, Co-Artistic Director, Christal Wagner

Peter Stathas is a bit like a cold front meeting a warm front. You notice the shift in temperature, and the wind picks up a bit. You have a feeling a storm might brew, but in the moment, you are taken aback by the pleasure of a breeze on your skin and the humidity in the air. And yet, in the possibility that the storm might pass, there is also potential for lightning to strike. That is Peter.

At the age of 60, Peter re-emerged on the dance scene to approach choreography once more after a long hiatus. In his early years, he studied with Gerri Houlihan, Lar Lubovitch, Mel Wong, Mark Morris, and his mentor, Maggie Black. Formerly a Limón dancer, Peter’s approach is poetic, and his work is speckled with nuances of the present moment. Utilizing the subtle and fleeting details of emotions and gestures that arise in real-time collaboration with his dancers, he amplifies these moments in his process to create humanly raw choreography that challenges the performers’ endurance and capacity for delicacy.

1 unique partnership + 2 unique shows

Peter and I have been talking for several years now about collaboration. He is always cooking up new ideas, and we sometimes meet monthly to talk about art, the art scene, and cooking up “things.”
