About the show: In Biome, Gina Laurenzi creates a choreographic ecosystem where multiple elements of the visual and sonic are nestled in an undercurrent of wonder. Drawing inspiration from her experiences scuba diving, Laurenzi builds an aquatic world where creatures known, and imaginary, are danced to life by Danceworks Performance MKE. Laurenzi’s current research on wonder, awe, and the Anthropocene intersect and fuse as the company of artists leads the audience into a sensorial immersive experience. Original compositions by collaborator Allen Russell provide a haunting soundscape and transport the viewer into the underwater world of Biome.

About the show: Together Danceworks Performance MKE and APERI ANIMAM embark on a rhythmic journey with Handel’s passionate setting of “Dixit Dominus”. At just 22 years old, Handel composed this master work in 1707 during his time in Italy. Audiences can expect a more flamboyant approach as this work is full of intricate vocal lines intertwined with rhythmic energy. With its dynamic interplay between soloists and choir, “Dixit Dominus” exudes a sense of dramatic fervor that reflects Handel’s profound ability to evoke both grandeur and intimacy while amplifying the sentiments of the war between heaven and hell. In juxtaposition to Handel’s baroque style, this concert features a world premiere by choreographer Maria Gillespie, that carefully pairs sophisticated repertoire with her authentically raw movement aesthetic, highlighting secular works in the polyphonic style.

About the show: Jazz dance emerges from intricate stepping patterns and vibrant social dance styles deeply rooted in the rich tapestry of West African Dance and the Diaspora. More currently, this art form is known for its short bursts of playful and performative routines, showcased in dance competition shows on national networks. Beneath the well-deserved fame lies an uncharted realm of Jazz’s Swing and Social Dance origins—a realm that often remains shrouded from popular perception. DPMKE investigated the roots and branches of this form, drawing inspiration from Swing Styling, Hip Hop, and vernacular stepping patterns, all infused with a Contemporary Jazz spin. This showcase promised to offer a captivating variety of movement and sound, poised to both mesmerize and ground our audience in its uniquely American history.
