Danceworks Performance MKE’s 2021-22 Season

Danceworks Performance MKE, formerly Danceworks Performance Company (DPC) – is an ensemble of performing artists with dynamically different movement training and experiences that uses its diverse breadth of techniques to strengthen the virtuosity of art making through dance performance. They return to the stage after a year of outdoor and virtual collaborations. The group maintains a commitment to celebrating the vitality and diversity of the Milwaukee arts community, creating works with curiosity and rigor, heightening the voices and talents of our skilled performers and community members. DPMKE is artistically directed by Christal Wagner.

Danceworks Performance MKE strives to make its work relevant and accessible to a wide range of audience members by regularly performing and teaching workshops and residencies in diverse communities throughout Southeastern Wisconsin. About the Show:

Artistic Director Christal Wagner and Danceworks Performance MKE collectively take a scientific approach to unearthing what happens when the nervous system goes haywire. This concert offers a meditative exploration of movement and visuals that dive into the stress cycle, the nervous system and its various subdivisions. Influenced by the stressors of the Covid-19 Pandemic, the company aims to support our community struggling with mental health and general stress through a year-long mission that exposes how we can overcome these deeply wired roadblocks and reveal a path to a healthier future. We offer an educational and microscopic look into the fight, flight or freeze response by exploring ideas anyone can employ to become more deeply self aware. Composer Sam Mullooly premieres an ambitious work of complimentary sentiment titled “A Balance.”

About the Show:

Senior company member and Choreographer Gina Laurenzi collaborates with Chicago band Twin Talk to create a contemporary movement experience with a jazz influence. In Sonder, we welcome live music to the stage as DPMKE dancers and Twin Talk share space, tune into one another and playfully delight in improvisation. Crafting a blend of sound and movement guaranteed to set a mood and satisfy the senses, the artists invite the audience into an intimate world as they flow into conversation, communicating through their respective art forms.

About the Show:

This DPMKE curated concert features the ideas of the performers and guest artists of DPMKE as they explore the impacts of labels, their danger to society, and the liberating effects of restructuring the societal labels around us. In a curious investigation of the internal assignment of ideas we apply to ourselves and others on a daily basis, Danceworks aims to heighten the voices of the BIPOC and LGBTQ+ company and community members. In this concert, we collectively break down the use of stereotypes, internal bias, fear, stigma, shame and the inability to separate a person from a label dubbed by society and/or self.
