Experience African Dance with Gujja Ting African Art!

Learn about and experience different styles of African dance with workshops and performances from the dancers of Gujja Ting African Art at Danceworks this July!


African Contemporary Workshops
July 6, 20, 27 — 10:00am-11:30am

This class integrates several dance styles and techniques ranging from, but not limited to: traditional dance, yoga inspirations, and urban dance.  This class goes beyond the “flat images” and the “narrow perspective” of language that is belonging to the participant bodies and personalities.  Exercises will focus on the mobility of the spine, developing coordination with the physics of motion creative expression, improve mobility, strength, flexibility, coordination, and sense of rhythm.

Robert is a Ugandan dancer and researcher who just finished his diploma in dance at Ecole des Sables in Senegal.  He has traveled around Africa and Europe teaching workshops in contemporary and traditional African dance.  Robert brings back everything he learns abroad back to his home in Kampala, and shares it with the youth at the organization he helped found, Gujja Ting African Art.

Youth African Workshops
July 2, 9, 16 — 11:30am-12:30pm
Ages 13+

This class will have aspects of traditional Ugandan dance, hip hop, dance hall, and Afrohouse throughout the class.  The class will build upon skills from the different types of dance while mixing them together to build one cohesive style.

Saturday, July 15 — 7:00pm

Come enjoy an eclectic night of dancing with Gujja Ting African Art! Enjoy performances by guest artists Robert Ssempijja and Joel Talemwa from Kampala, Uganda in collaboration with several local dancers performing a variety of dances including contemporary, traditional Ugandan, tap, hip hop, and Afro House! Come experience these amazing artists and help support Gujja Ting African Art!

Tickets: $12 general admission; $10 student/senior

Gujja Ting African Art‘s mission is to empower the youth living in the slums of Uganda by raising their personal expectations and providing them with a real chance to succeed in life. This is done through creative workshops offered at the local “house” maintained for this purpose, a school fees program, and family mentality.
